Artist Spotlight: Fortitude

Artist Introduction

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Fortitude from Lacrosse, WI

What’s the story behind your stage name?
Fortitude is synonymous with courage and virtue. In a rap culture swarming with avarice, concupiscence, and lust for power, the idea of fortitude rarely penetrates into the landscape.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I started making music with a guitar while in the Army, that burnt out, but I still wrote poetry. I began rapping in 2018 by trying to recreate popular songs. A year later, I discovered philosophy, took up physics in college, and began having spiritual experiences – which I now bring to my writing and production in one way or another.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
The many translations I have heard of it, some people think it is about a girl, some people think it is about God.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
A good and virtuous life is difficult and filled with challenges, but beyond beautiful.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I recorded, mixed, and mastered it myself. It took a lot of research and time experimenting to figure out a decent sound. I’m not a pro by any means, but after 150 hours of mixing, I was able to dial in on a good method for it. The moment I heard the lyrics sit right in the mix was magical.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
This is a difficult question… either U2, Cage the Elephant, or Kendrick Lamar.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I want to do as many music videos as possible for my upcoming album. But they gotta be good.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I just hope people can get a good message from my songs. This one is on the lighter side, my upcoming album Under the August Sun, to be released on all platforms October 1st, is an extremely immersive and heavy set collection of songs – most of which are not radio-friendly. I hope people give it a chance. Everyone I have shown it to has walked out the other end speechless.
