Artist Spotlight: Kandalit

Artist Introduction

What’s your stage name and where are you from?

Kandalit, from The Gambia, West Africa

What’s the story behind your stage name?

The idea is, surrounded by darkness, I’m a flame that stays lit. Candle Lit. The idea came from the mood and vibe of having written lyrics in candlelight. That’s the mood and vibe I portray, and it opens up a ton of metaphors to do with flames staying lit, being inextinguishable, being the flame that lights up the darkness, etc.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

Started writing lyrics, making beats, recording, mixing, and dropping songs from age 15-24. My first gig was in 2004, and I have performed live on many occasions since. I have been dropping countless songs and projects on the regular, and will continue to do so.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

“Time Will Tell” (my latest track) was originally meant to be a collab with a Tanzanian artist. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to get on the track, so having laid down the first verse and chorus, I wrote the second verse around 2 months after the first.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

Through all the different types of challenges you will face, in whatever shape or form they appear, you can blaze through them with determination, focus, application, and a real knowledge of what it is you are doing.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

The challenges aren’t many, as I handle all my own production. That’s making the beat, recording my vocals, mixing and mastering, as well as cover design and promotion, so the only challenges would be things like avoiding distractions, which is easy enough when I’m zoned into producing dope music.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Vinnie Paz. His production is the kind I like, dark booming beats, and I like his flow.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

More exposure, more streams, and more money to put out more music.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

Getting a larger number of consistent streams, fans, and listeners.
