Artist Introduction

What’s your stage name and where are you from?

n!co. I am from Minnesota.

What’s the story behind your stage name?

It’s my real name, but it looked a little boring as just my name, so I added the exclamation point to make it a little more memorable.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

I started out just trying to copy my favorites, like Earl Sweatshirt and MIKE, and that stayed consistent for my first few songs and album. After finding out how much I enjoyed making beats after doing a beat tape and making beats every single day for about a month, I took a little break before I started to work on my next album. It’s called eighteen and it’s coming out on June 3rd, and it’s by far the best music I’ve made.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

I told myself I wasn’t going to make any music after finishing the album I’m about to put out, but then a couple of days after finishing it I made four beats in a row. I can’t stay away, I guess.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

Be creative, have fun, take that risk, make that art. You won’t regret it.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

I encountered a little bit of a writing block during the middle of making my upcoming album, and the solution was to just stop trying to force it, and just live and pay attention to life for about a week. Going into music with life experiences and using it as an update to your life really helps it flow out, instead of being forced out.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

The Alchemist. I think I could sliiiide on an Alc beat. Preferably I’d do an album with him but that’s me being greedy and getting a little too hopeful. Plus he just seems like a really cool guy with lots of wisdom.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

Nowhere. I’m gonna be one of those underground people who blows up a year and a half after I die and have a really weird culty fanbase.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

I wanna do another beat tape, and then I want to make like three 7-10 track albums in a row. After that, probably withdraw my $4 from streaming royalties and retire to the Caribbean.
