Artist Introduction

What’s your stage name and where are you from?

X (Ten), pronounced Ten, from Baltimore, MD

What’s the story behind your stage name?

Originally, I just wanted to use “X” as a symbol for Ten. But I didn’t trust it would give me ease of translation with the audience. To this day, I want to rebrand to separate myself because since I’ve started releasing music, there have been so many artists with iterations of my name.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

Brainstorming/studying and getting the moxie to record and write. Exposure; showing up to events, open mics, and shows to network and perform. Education; I figured a lot of aspects out about the music industry and started to create my path. Practicing and creating, I’ve been a lot more experimental and personal with music.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

So my song “7.02.22”, from my EP “UMAI”, was a song created over 2 years. First off, I create my own music, including down to the production, so I have a thing with “learning and applying in real-time”. I will produce and write simultaneously and sometimes fall in love with audio mistakes and work around them the best I can. Sometimes the “mistakes” are so bad they can’t clean up audibly and make it studio clean without sacrificing the entire vibe of the song. The interesting experience is that you can clearly hear in this song me committing to the sound, finishing the song. To me, I found it interesting how the song clearly reflects the different time periods with me vocally.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

I create music based on my personal experiences and fictional stories, so any messaging would be unique to the projects or individual songs. For example, my EP “UMAI”, which translates to “good”. This EP has the “good” songs that I considered the best quality songs that I was working on, but individually these songs reflect the timestamps titled and have their own separate messages within.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

I am learning in real-time, aiming to achieve the best possible sound but being self-taught is a process. Sometimes there’s a competition with balancing life, so that definitely plays a part in the production. But you figure everything out, it comes with the process.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Definitely Ye. A lot of the reason I got the motivation to finally record and perform was literally from me seeing so many shows during that 2011-2014 time. Watch the Throne tour, Yeezus tour, Childish Gambino, I was seeing some amazing things. Coupled with being in architecture school, I honestly was immersed in art and creation at the time.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I plan to organize and do a few more releases this year, including instrumental projects. My goal is to clear out the music sitting on my hard drive and get it released. I really want to get my music on some commercials and video games.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

Writing more for people, production, more exposure really but not in the sense of spotlight. I want to be the pivotal “behind the scenes” creator. I don’t want to tour on a festival stage or anything like that; I want to own the festival. I want to have production on the next “Sicko Mode”. I want my Grammy that way.
