What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Demetrie Jones
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Demetrie is my middle name (Mario Demetrie Jones). It was a name that my Grandma used to tease me with and i hated it haha. “Lil Demetrie this and that” and i know at some point she used to just call me it just to see how i’d react to it, Id get angry haha. She passed away in 2012. In honor of her i call myself Demetrie. “Jones” is my last name from my biological mothers side but she mostly was a ghost growing up. Freddie Mae Gibbs is my grandma’s name but i can’t call my self Demetrie Gibbs because listeners would think im Related to Freddie Gibbs the rapper lol (Ironically the same name as my grandma), Weird family history.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Mistakes, Realization, Redemption
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
In my new EP “Turmoil in Tulsa” i have a song with my daughter and she loves it. “Signals” is the name of the song and her voice is at the end of the song. What makes it interesting is that i didnt realize how deep i had to go my Psyche to write the song and was surprised when i heard the finalized version back. May be relatable to the listeners too.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I write my life and present it to the listeners, Raw, real and unforgiving about the approach, which will make the listener listen more than once to catch the meaning. He or she may even take a look at themselves as a human, the same way i do in alot of my songs. I talk about my good and bad habits including my vices as human and how that may affect me being a Father. It’s really an art form to me to generalize it. I guess i would fall into the “Conscious” sub-genre of hip hop for some. But i try not to box myself in because i am inspired by quite a few artist new and old. Lets just call it Art.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Just getting the general sound down so it sounds right in the Master. Once me and Lonnie found the “sound” we stuck with it and been runnin’ with it ever since. In addition i just recently realized i don’t like a lot of empty space in my songs (spaces where it just the beat, no vocals) and honestly it bothers me. A balance needed to be found to see what songs would fall under this condition.
