What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is J Faith, and I’m from Lowell, Massachusetts.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
“J” is the first letter of my name (Justin), and originally “Faith” was added to have multiple meanings—faith in yourself, faith that things will work out, faith in God, etc. As I progressed into Christian Hip Hop, it’s now stood more on the idea of having faith in God, and everything I listed before will all come to pass.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I began and continue as an independent artist since 2013 with the release of my first project “I’m Still Human.” Over the years, I’ve consistently studied all aspects of music, not just the creation, to properly grow as an artist. Today, I find myself happy as a Christian artist creating music with Mertz at the Bridge Sound and Stage to inspire others and help them grow within themselves.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
One of my latest songs, “Don’t Stop (Rise Up),” was created as a performance track for the Boys & Girls Club of America’s National Keystone Conference to kick off the event for 2,000 people. I created the song with a teen named Bella who was interested in music, and after we performed it, many people at the conference asked where they could find it. We decided to clean everything up and release it.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
The message I want to convey through my music is one of a personal testimony that people can relate to, with hopes of overcoming obstacles. The other message is simply the craft of hip hop and storytelling, uplifting others through music.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I was having trouble recording a song when it came to the vocals and how they sounded. A friend of mine, who was moving, decided to stop by the studio, and I openly shared the issues I was having. He told me to stand back from the mic about 5 feet and scream the lyrics, which ended up adding more fullness to the vocals. It truly shows that when it comes to creation, there are many unique ways to do it—don’t be afraid to try new things, and be open to ideas from others.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
It used to be Joe Budden, but since he’s retired, it would have to be KB or NF.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I see my music connecting more with fans, and for me to connect with them more—not only through streaming and social media, but also in person through shows and touring.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Just continuing to grow as an artist, as a person, and keep creating music that I’m happy with. I know everything else will follow.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
All music is available on streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, etc.
What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?
