What’s your stage name and where are you from?

My stage name is Kevin Nova. I’m from New Brunswick, NJ but was raised in Palm Beach County, FL.

What’s the story behind your stage name?

My name comes from the term supernova, a star that’s reached the end of its life cycle and is blowing up. As a teen, I looked up in the sky one day and noticed the supernova I’d been looking at all my life, and in that moment I could fully relate and commit to it. Ironically enough before I was Nova, I went by Ambition.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

My musical journey is one of perseverance, dedication, and life long lasting lessons. From recording on my own at the age 12 to attending a university after high school to earn a degree in music, to opening my record label and fully committing myself to being an artist, I could always see myself in the music industry.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

My last track was actually the self titled track off the album, Groundwork ‘93. For the record, I’m not signed to any major label so any funding or investments comes directly from me. With that said it was the 4th quarter and I was wrapping up the album. I’d finally gotten the producers and engineers their payment but had an idea on how to make the album bigger and reach a broader audience, a release party with a live band to accompany the production. Of course I knew this would cost a bit of money but I lucked out. A venue owner in downtown West Palm Beach was willing to let me do not just one but six release parties at his venue free of charge. This was a game changer and a perfect way to begin the rollout of the album.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

Just to never give up on yourself or your dreams. For me, that’s what keeps me going. I know as a kid, music is really what kept me alive. So I just hope to have that same impact.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

Funny enough, I think the biggest challenge that I faced during production was choosing what songs were going on the album and which ones weren’t. I spent over a year building up this body of work so you can only imagine the selection process was bittersweet. All in all the main focus was cohesiveness and getting the message across consistently, which I think I did a pretty good job of doing.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

J. Cole. Since I was a teenager, I felt like he was the artist that I can relate to the most when it comes to his story, his style his production. So needless to say, I think whatever we create would be the perfect equation for hip-hop.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I just want to see my music reach a broader audience. Whether that means performing at festivals, playing my music on radio, editorial press from major blogs, or seeing my songs up for nomination of any prestigious music awards. I just want to see my music grow.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

My next big step is to land of marketing deal with a major record label.
