Artist Introduction

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Wonkerz, originally from Asheville, NC. Based out of Nashville, TN

What’s the story behind your stage name?
One of many nicknames over the years.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I’m a multi-instrumentalist forever lost in the sauce. Raised by the cultural mixture of folk, jazz, and electronic music out of Asheville, North Carolina, I’ve been playing music professionally 15+ years. Currently have a lot of lofi out, but hope to show no genre off limits by the time I’m done.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I accidentally sent a vocal track through a Leslie speaker when trying to bus it to delay, and it gave it a ghostly warbly effect I wasn’t going for, but loved it so much I just left it as is. Didn’t even send it to the delay because the spin of the Leslie completely made the track.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
Movement and Energy. Wether it be meditative, chaotic, or anywhere in between.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I’ve been working on a full orchestral arrangement, and needed more types of horns to give it a more authentic sound besides the couple of MIDI instruments I had. By playing the lines on my sax and doing some pitch shifting and EQ, I was able to give it the warmth of a trombone or the brassiness of a trumpet that, when paired with their MIDI counterparts, really solidified the sound of the whole section.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Uyama Hiroto. He combines all of my favorite elements of Jazz and Hip-Hop together to form a nice spiritual body of work. We also both play piano and saxophone so we could speak the same language even if we’re from two different countries.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’ve been generally dormant the past year or so collaborating and producing with other artists. Hopefully with some stuff I have coming down the pipeline I’ll be able to stake more of my own claim on the sonic landscape and have the “wonkerz” sound be both more defined and spread out at the same time.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
More solo releases of varying vibes.

Recent Work & Contact Info

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
My most recent collaboration is with fellow producer on Cake Records, Casein, and rapper Jyou. Song and video links.
