What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is Zips.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
I chose the name ‘Zips’ because many of us live life like a game, keeping score, but we all start from zero/scratch/zip. I wanted my name to represent that, no matter who we are, we all begin at the same point – ‘Zips’. I also sometimes just need to zip it up and get to the point! Lol

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
My musical journey has been a wild ride, shaping me into the person I am today. Being a creator/artist has been a rollercoaster of emotions, teaching me more about myself every day. I have this deep passion for creating music, and I was told that this urge we all have to create is actually God trying to express himself through us.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
After releasing a song every Friday for 2024, people kept saying that my songs were great, but my songwriting, bars, and lyrics were basic. At first, it hurt, but it also gave me a fire to become a better writer and create songs that could really stand out. That’s how ‘Home Plate’ came to be. I was determined to show everyone what I could really do with my lyrics.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
I’m passionate about being true to myself and sharing my unique take on life. I hope my experiences and thoughts can resonate with others in a meaningful way, just like music has for me. Often, my message is motivational nuances I know I need to hear to keep pushing forward.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I can think of a few things that come to mind. The main one is self-sufficiency. When I wanted to record, I didn’t want to rely on an audio engineer or booking a studio session. So, I bought equipment and learned how to record myself. I used to spend a lot of money on videographers to shoot music videos and short-form content. Often, I was dissatisfied with the amount of effort they put into their work. So, I got my own camera and learned how to edit to have more control over the vision and see it through the way I envisioned. If you want something done right, do it yourself.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
If I had to choose between the most influential musicians of all time, it would be a tough call. Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Amy Winehouse all have a special place in my heart. Their music has had a profound impact on me, and it would be an honor to even be in their presence and witness their creative process.

If I had to choose some of the most talented musicians who are still alive, I’d have to say Dominic Fike, Jon Bellion, Russ, Connor Price, Nic D, and Jack Harlow. These artists have inspired me to keep pursuing my passion for music, and I’m so grateful for their talent and dedication to the craft.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’m passionate about creating music and continuously improving as an artist, musician, producer, audio engineer, and content creator. Sharing my creations with others who appreciate them is an added bonus. I’m all about growing my following and listeners, but I also remember that the real journey is about becoming the best version of myself. I let go of the need to control everything and trust that everything will work out in the best way possible.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
In the short term, my goal is to continuously create and improve myself, striving to be a better version of myself each day. In the long run, I aim to build a body of work that can have a significant impact on people’s lives. I want to inspire them to embrace life fully, to give it their all, and to never give up.
