Artist Spotlight: Da Sun Ja from Virginia Beach, VA

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is Da Sun Ja, originally born in Miami, FL, and raised in Virginia Beach, VA.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
Great question! So my stage name is more of a double entendre expressing two distinct characteristics of myself and what I both metaphorically and literally represent. Da Sun is the metaphor. It derives from my last name, Wilson. Long story short, I took the second half of my last name and replaced the “O” in “Son” with a “U” to reference the actual “Sun.” The “Sun” means I am enlightened, providing a great source of significant energy and value to the world while being surrounded by complete darkness or failure. The “Son” means I am the chosen one in my family to create generational wealth in a non-traditional way. “Ja” is simply the first half of my first name, and there you have it—Da Sun Ja.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Pitch Black. Somewhere. Light.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
My latest track right now is a rough draft. I don’t have many interesting experiences in the studio. I’m usually just locked in a dark room with no distractions—just me, my thoughts, and an empty canvas. I don’t write; I record what I’m thinking and feeling at the time.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
Our mind is neuroplastic and a terrible thing to waste. We are powerful masters and creators. Each of us has purpose and a responsibility to contribute.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I record, mix, and master 100% of my work. Any artist or producer can relate and agree that every day is just a grind to remain relevant and up to date. Through it all, I realized computer crashes, reboots, freezes, sound card issues, and distorted speakers are part of the game. You have to update your equipment every once in a while, research new information, and continue asking questions.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I’m willing to collab with anyone who’s dope and supportive of what I got going on. I appreciate great music from artists who have a deep love for the art. The good-spirited people, the legends, and the next-level thinkers—that’s who I’d aspire to collab with.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Worldwide. Stadium status. Platinum.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Touring and networking.

Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
Live shows, playlists, podcasts, radio, blogs—basically any promo that can potentially lead to more fans and opportunities.
