What’s your stage name and where are you from?
ellisd, Richmond, VA.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
My actual name is David Ellis. I wanted something that was unique to me but still had stage presence. Broken down it’s my last name followed by my first initial: ellisd.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
In the beginning, it was never about making music for other people. I’ve been fortunate enough to have the right group around me to let me know this is a lane I could impact, and I’m honestly just excited to see where things go. Sharing your art with the world is an unexplainable feeling.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I’m in a bit of a weird spot right now because I don’t want to box myself into just one sound. I’ve been experimenting with different genres and sounds, and the toughest part is figuring out what to release next. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between what listeners want and what I’m excited to share.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
Be yourself. Life really is whatever you make it.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
The hardest part for me is needing chemistry with whoever I’m creating with. Many collaborations haven’t seen the light of day because things didn’t align. I’m at the point where I’m not forcing music—it’s all about quality and putting out songs that I’m proud of.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I’ve always wanted to be in the same room as Tory Lanez, Drake, or Jordan Ward. Their approach to their music and love for the process… I think it would be contagious.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I just want to make dope music and connect with as many people as I can. For me, the music is all about bringing a community together and being able to feel something from that.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Getting my branding down. I took a year off from creating to find myself. Now that I’m in a good place mentally, the next step is transitioning from a random artist to a branded one.
We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
For sure!
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
Always looking for ways to get more engagement.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
YouTube! I just dropped a music video for Lifeline (Watch Here). I’m also on all major streaming platforms.
