What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Jeremy Mage, from New York.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
It’s my name.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Started out as a keyboard player and sideman for Dubside of the Moon, Wunmi, and Lizz Wright. Leaned into songwriting and production. Now I stay home with my kids as much as I can and collab widely.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
This was one Nicole Night and I started years ago in NYC together. Since then, she moved back to the West Coast, and I moved to Switzerland. I was inspired to finish the track, and in the meantime, weed got legalized in New York City!
What message do you want to convey through your music?
In this case, the message is, let’s have freaking fun! But in other music, I’m aiming more for finding ways to combat the isolation and alienation of late-stage consumer capitalism.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Started this song so long ago that I used different software (Digital Performer). When I returned to it, I really wanted to make the drums way more hitting, and I had to re-learn parts of the workflow to do it. But it worked out.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I’m really feeling WILLOW these days, would love to write a song with her.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I just had a nice win on a song collab in a contest with Beyond Music (part of the Tina Turner foundation), and I’m hoping that will lead to more collabs. I love collaborating and creating new stuff from different perspectives.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
More shows for my personal projects.
We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Sure. I’m a talker.
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
Playlisting, live shows, Meta advertising, and Instagram presence.
