In our editorial vision, we draw focus to this release—an offering that carries the weight of craft, intention, and presence. Whether this is your first encounter with iies. or a continued step along their path, the music calls for your full attention.

iies. (pronounced as eyes) is an experimental jazz rap group, based in Denver, Colorado, which functions at the critical point of both political urgency and musical innovation. The band, which consists of lyricist Craig Northup II, guitarist Aidan Roberts, bassist Jacob Montano, and drummer Nick Schell, has established its presence in the Colorado scene, playing gigs at such places as Dazzle and the Underground Music Showcase. The character of their work is characterized by the focus on perspective with the background of jazz, blues, rock, and hip-hop to address the topics of mental health, trauma, and social responsibility. Their next album, Love Is Cutthroat, changes the limits of the genre and grows the collective in its requirements of a more considered and thoughtful society.

The single is a foundation of their future venture, Love Is Cutthroat, an exploration of the weaponization of devotion to country or ideology in the absence of empathy. No Kings particularly is aimed at complacency which permits institutional power to be unchecked. It is a call to responsibility, and its message is not put across in the chaos, but through a new faith in democratic involvement. The group provokes us to pose a question: who is the real beneficiary of our shared split and silence?

Finally, iies. relies on this track to fill the disconnect between the documentation and protest. They pay homage to the dirty truth of the hustle of independent business by taking away the sheen of mainstream hip-hop in favor of a rough, unfiltered, and experimental sound in jazz-rap. They remind us that the strength of the people can only work well when it is loud, active and not afraid of challenging the kings of industries as well as those who control the governments.
