What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Spenser Phoenix from Melbourne, Australia.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
It’s actually my real name.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I started playing guitar back when I was 5, inspired by my dad, who was a traveling musician. I got Ableton when I was 17 and taught myself how to produce, focusing on hip hop and electro. When I was 24, I attended a jazz show that blew me away, inspiring me to return to guitar, and I haven’t looked back since.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
The song changed styles many times as I wrote it. Originally, it was more funk-based and less energetic, but I felt it was missing something. Once I added the solo, I knew the song was ready; the energy lifted, building to a climax at the end.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want people to listen to my music with headphones on and no distractions. I try to make my songs evolve as they progress, with little Easter eggs you won’t notice on the first listen—it pays to rewind and go again!

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
The drums were recorded in less than four hours, along with five other songs in that same time frame. The engineer was going overseas, so we had to get it done then and there, and luckily, we managed to pull it off!

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Probably Kendrick Lamar (long shot, I know). He’s one of my favorite artists ever and has inspired me immensely—not so much in mimicking his sound, but in how he’s unafraid to try new things and blend different aspects together. If Eddie Van Halen were still alive, it’d definitely be him. RIP to the legend.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I see myself getting more and more opportunities to work with great artists all over the world. My sound is global, and I’d love to collaborate with as many people as possible in any way.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I’ve got plenty of songs in the bank, as well as some features and collaborations ready for this year. For me, I want to be consistent with my releases and get noticed by other artists so we can make more music together.
