What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is J Swish and I’m a first-generation Latino from Anaheim.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
My dad and friends have called me “J” since I was young, and the “Swish” was added when I was out shooting hoops with a friend of mine.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I found my love for music when I felt like no one understood me. I studied percussion in middle school, began teaching myself to produce in high school, and continued my learning journey in college. Now, I am using everything I’ve learned to foster my passion and make it a full-time career.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
While working on my latest release, “Im Up,” I was able to get a crew together to film a music video, which was a really cool and new experience for me. We went to different locations, filming in the heat, and I’m excited for people to see the results when the video drops.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want to relate to people who are going through tough times in their lives and help them feel understood. I also want to give people the courage to pursue their passions for their own happiness.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
While producing, I dealt with issues in the mastering process where things weren’t sounding as balanced or as loud as I wanted. I went through many trials of exporting the music and testing it on different speakers until I felt it was in a good place.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I would love to work with Kid Cudi because I’ve always been a huge fan of his music, and I think our styles would complement each other.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
By next year, I hope to be working on music full-time to have more time to create new projects for my fans.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
The next big step would be to increase exposure and grow my fanbase so I can start performing at shows.

We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Yes, that sounds awesome.

Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
No, thank you.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, etc.
