Artist Spotlight: Abstract Soundz from Oxfordshire, UK

14

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
I go by Abstract Soundz, and I’m from Oxfordshire in the UK.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
It’s a nod to the sampling process, taking sounds and putting my own twist on them.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I started making beats around age 17/18 during the chipmunk soul era of hip hop. I was heavily influenced by the early Kanye West and Just Blaze sound, but I’ve since gotten more old school. Nowadays, I focus on jazzy boom bap beats synonymous with golden era hip hop from the early ’90s.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
The most interesting part of making any track is seeing what an MC can bring to a beat—how they get inspired by it and bring that missing element that hopefully brings the track to life.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want to get people’s heads nodding and give them the same feeling I get when listening to a really great hip hop track.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
The mixing process is always a challenge for me, as I always want the beat to sound as good as possible before I send it out. I’m still learning every day, but I’ve managed to improve by getting feedback from MCs and taking that on board to keep developing.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I’d love to collaborate with people like Skyzoo, Planet Asia, and anyone else on that underground hip hop sound, as they’re perfect for my type of production.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Just hope to get more artists to jump on my beats and get some releases out there.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
To just keep getting placements and collaborations under my belt.

We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
For sure!

Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
I just need to get more music out there and work with more artists to gain traction.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
My Instagram: @abstractsoundz_uk.

What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?
Instagram is probably the easiest way to get in touch.
