Golden Blindfold comes in like an alarm-call to the sleeping-city–a sort of anthem, and a sort of warning-beacon. The song starts off immediately drowning the ears in war drums and distorted urgency intertwined with the lead vocals that seem to waver in both sound tragic and gritting the teeth verses of rap. The message: the world is coming apart and we are too lured by bad fantasy to do anything about it.
Alexander Davis writes it not only as an enthusiast of grit and poetry, but as an individual who hears roar backstage of the production. Golden Blindfold is not a song but a prescription of cultural listlessness, of mesmeric disaster a few layers deep in the caffeinated self-medicating codine. It tells me what too many artists hide: we are ill, and we are falsely behaving that we are not.
The genius of Luminary Flux, however, comes in that it does not merely air the breakdown. They criticise it. The chorus is reversing the gravity of the verses as though it were a call to arms: “Take off your golden blindfold, look at what you are sold.” That is more than a hook. That’s resistance. That is when singers ceased to comfort and started honing their voices.
Beneath the blistering tempo and cumulative build, the song turns into a study case of how art can restore blown apart community- by being honest when no one can be. It testifies to the stigma around mental health that haunts artistic communities as burnouts are romanticized and pain is being commoditized. In this single, Luminary Flux cuts open the vein and tells us: let us speak. It is time to quit fooling around that we are fine.
It is not rebellion as an end in itself, and it is also not a demand to save terrain in the name of going collective once again being numbed in a world whose collective insanity has afflicted it.
