Artist Introduction
What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Dominick Giovanni, originally from Ny, but raised in Killeen, Tx and currently living in San Antonio.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
My first and middle name. I decided to work within my true self, so that I could remain honest with my art and not become a character. Also, my son’s name is the reverse, Giovanni Dominick, and I thought it would be cool for him to see himself represented through the art I create as well.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
A Life-long journey. A means of grounding and release amidst the madness and struggles I’ve endured. I feel it’s connected me to a global tribe of like minds and made me feel less alone in some of my hardest moments.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I wrote a track called “Days After” for my mother who recently passed, and thought to keep it to myself thinking that no one would want to hear something somber or so deeply reflective. I was surprised that in a batch of tunes I was excited about sharing, most people kept preferring that particular one, and my friend and label manager Desh, specifically chose that one as a single. I feel like my mom is behind that in more ways than one and am grateful to still have her willing me to create in her own way.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want people to live inspired and recognize the gift of life. Whether that be pursuing dreams that seem impossible or just finding contentment in the smallest details, appreciate the gifts given and push toward the reality you want for yourself and others you imprint upon. Secondly, I aim to honor the folks that came before me in the art form of choice I use, namely rapping, by crafting to the highest of my ability each time out. I hope that purpose resonates and inspires others in the same way I was by my forebearers.
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Last year, in the midst of creating this project, my mom passed on suddenly. I was devastated and numb. I lost motivation and direction and felt like I was floating along aimlessly. I am still fighting the pain and ache of not having her here to share in the triumphs and achievements or to just ask for guidance. With that said, the relationships that I’ve made through music, however random they may have felt at the moment, have given me a different appreciation for the connections and bonds creating art can build. My producer, Monma, has become a true friend of mine and is just one example of how beautiful and fulfilling this musical journey is when you operate transparently and with love. I’m grateful beyond words to have had this outlet in this season of life.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Elzhi. He is one of my lyrical goats and crafts at what I consider to be one of the highest levels of wordsmithing. I write with a few emcees in mind as if I were guesting on a track with them, and he has always been a benchmark that I aspired to in my own writing. My goal is to earn my place amongst writers of that caliber so that a collaboration wouldn’t be strange at all.
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
God willing, I’ll see more work completed with some of my fellow artists, Mantangi, Monma, Genesis7, Rap Society .
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I would really love to make a trip overseas to work with some of friends in person and possibly hit up a tour for folks supporting me!
