Artist Introduction
What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Hendy and I’m from Des Moines, IA but currently live in Los Angeles, CA
What’s the story behind your stage name?
My full name is Tyler Hendershot so the nickname Hendy had been given to me when I was younger. I initially wasn’t a fan of it, but as I got older, it began to grow on me. By the time I had decided to become a solo artist, it felt like a good fit and there was no other ‘Hendy’ that was an established artist at that point. Thus, Hendy was solidified and I began establishing a music career.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I began making music in 8th grade but mainly played guitar and focused on creating rock & indie type music. I had always been a hip-hop head though, and by the time I was in college I had made the pivot to producing, rapping, and singing. From then on (2018), I made a full pivot to hip-hop with soul and r&b influence and haven’t looked back.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
We shot a full production music video for this song that perfectly encompasses how this song sounds and feels. We borrowed my friend’s 1976 Volvo and took it up and down the Pacific Coast Highway for an entire day and the shoot simply couldn’t have gone better. After having to push the music video twice over the course of 6 weeks due to various issues, it felt like the entire concept of the visuals was slipping away from us. Thankfully, it all came together really well and we made something that really captures the tone of this track.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want anyone who listens to my music to feel that they can be themselves. I often felt (and sometimes still do feel) imposter syndrome with being a white hip-hop artist that’s from Iowa. But, I’ve become comfortable with the fact that nobody else can define who I am but me. My music should remind people that you’re free to become whoever you want to.
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
My laptop is unfortunately starting to show its age and I recently upgraded my audio interface before recording this track. There was a learning curve with my updated setup and it caused me to have to re-record the vocals a number of times. It was frustrating but we powered through haha.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with an east coast rap legend some day. Some of my all-time favorites are Nas, Jay-Z, Black Thought, etc. so someone like Joey Badass would be a huge honor for me.
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’d love to start touring within the next year. I’ve been able to grow my brand into something that people buy into and want to see grow. As both a passionate artist and business-minded person, I am confident that I’ll be able to grow a fan base and continue to meet people in the industry who
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I’ve had a number of songs in consideration for sync placements with large TV studios (Peacock, Showtime, MAX). Sadly, none of the looks have landed yet. It’s such a numbers game at times, but I’m confident that I can land one and hopefully use it as a launching point for growing my career.
