Artist Spotlight: Jane McNealy from Los Angeles

91

What’s your stage name and where are you from?

Jane McNealy. Los Angeles.

What’s the story behind your stage name?

No story, its my name!

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

My creative life has been an ephemeral Dance with Destiny filled with intrigue, longing, and experimentation.

During the 70s and 80s my writing had evolved to another level as I was also writing lyrics and music for musicals, so I was trying to put more layers to the message I was trying to create.

I am now at the point where I am re-living my writing journey as I digitalize the
hundreds of reel to reel analog tapes of music I’ve written over the years. It’s a daunting experience.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

I stayed up and composed for about 30 hours, and I then had to present my compositions including “Play It”.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

The beauty of love comes from the words and music of life, which are always changing.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

In the 1980’s I was hired to compose and record several pieces of music digitally,
and I was only given 5 days to do it in. My biggest obstacle was I had never used a computer to help compose music. I was using DOS, at the time (DOS lasted from 1981 to 1995. It was the primary operating system for Microsoft) As there was no such thing as ProTools or Finale for music composition, I had to hire an instructor to install it and teach me how to use it in three days (my deadline). This new music recording program was called Cakewalk, and it was a real challenge to learn. I stayed up for about 30 hours (part of the time with the instructor) and I then had to present my compositions ending with “Play It”. Fortunately, it all turned out well, and I’ve never had to do anything like that again!

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

I’ve been very fortunate to have already collaborated with many legendary artists!

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I will be releasing more music from my vast archive of reel-to-reels and continue releasing them on Lo-flo Records.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

I just finished a 25 episode project called, “Art & Murder” based on a true story that happened to me some years ago. Each episode has music I wrote for another
project, a one minute storyline that I read, along with a film noir style video drawn
by Julie Flogeac. We will release two episodes a week starting in May. I will also be releasing several albums with music from a 1/2 dozen musicals that were produced, that Alice Kuhns and I wrote over the years.

When you’ve written hundreds of songs, there’s no end in sight. The Beat goes on!
