Ari Joshua, the innovative guitarist known for his explorative soundscapes, has once again opened his vault to share a special gem with the world. “Tagine,” released on July 18, 2024, is a track that transports listeners back to the early 2000s, capturing the essence of a pivotal time in New York City’s musical landscape.

The Story Behind “Tagine”

“Tagine” is more than just a track; it’s a narrative steeped in history and emotion. Composed in the days following the tragic events of 9/11, this song captures the somber yet resilient spirit of New York City. The piece was inspired by Joshua’s drives across the bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan, en route to perform at a Moroccan restaurant named Tagine. The song’s name pays homage to this venue, where magic and music intertwined in the restaurant’s basement, creating an atmosphere of raw, unfiltered creativity.

A Trio of Talent

This track is not just a testament to Joshua’s prowess but also a showcase of the immense talent of his collaborators. Joining him are Joe Russo on drums and Marco Benevento on organ, both of whom are celebrated members of JRAD and The Benevento Russo Duo. Their synergy is palpable, their chemistry undeniable, as they weave a rich tapestry of sound that pays tribute to the psychedelic jazz legends who influenced them.

Musical Composition and Influence

“Tagine” dives deep into a dark, jazzy vibe reminiscent of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Medeski Martin & Wood. This instrumental track is an auditory journey through time, capturing the essence of a bygone era with its intricate melodies and face-melting guitar solos. The recording, made at Wombat Studios in Brooklyn, NY, during the early 2000s, captures the raw talent and creative exploration of these musicians in their early 20s.

Recording and Production

The track was recorded by Ross Bonadonna at Wombat Recording, mixed by Ari Raskin at Deep Water Studios, and mastered by Ed Brooks at Resonant Mastering. The design and layout were handled by Monte Mitchell and Forest Shore, adding a visual layer to the auditory experience.

Reflecting on the Past

Joshua reflects on the days spent at Tagine and The Knitting Factory, venues that were central to the jazz and jam band scenes of the time. He reminisces about the camaraderie and musical exploration that defined those days. “I was playing a lot around the city, Marco and Joe were two of my favorite players,” Joshua recalls. “We played several times in various configurations, and I would come to Tagine with my guitar, and later The Knitting Factory to play with them. They are two of my favorite players, so great to make music with.”
