Artist Spotlight: Koh-Dee from Tasmania, Australia

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Koh-Dee, and I’m from Tasmania, Australia. A little farm/tradie town called Sorell.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
It’s how you pronounce my real name: Cody. Got it from the dictionary, on how to pronounce words. Thought it’d make it easier for people all over the world to pronounce my name.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
It’s the greatest thing to have happened in my life.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
Which track? There have been too many. I’m making another rap song which is almost done— a Pokémon-based rap, but still made to sound cool, and indescribable whether or not you understand the game.
I have a new dance track that I’ve just finished, which has been a bit over-sexualized, including the moans of some female singers. You get the idea.
I’m also releasing my first collaboration since living in France, alongside a female French singer, singing beautifully in English.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
That I can do whatever the fuck I want, regardless of what people say. Regardless of what the media suggests I should say. And regardless of all those remedial trending ideologies that pertain to our community and careers today.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
My biggest challenge isn’t through production; I find making music extremely easy. My challenge is the marketers who are trying to make so much money off independent artists that they squirm and do whatever they’re told. My problem is with the people trying to make money off of me, who don’t belong beside me.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Obviously, my friends. I couldn’t give a fuck about celebrities— they’re only people too. I’m sure some of them are nice, but I barely know any of them. I don’t keep up with the Kardashians. I can barely keep up with the people I love.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
All around the world. I want my music to take me to America, Japan, more of Europe, and back to Australia again. Not to mention Thailand. I like Thailand.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
To never give a fuck about opinions that don’t matter to me, including your own. It shouldn’t matter what you do to anybody else, and I’m finding that out late in life. Make that the reason why I’m famous, like Miss Kaninna.
Because I don’t ever want to care for what you’ve got to say about me unless it’s valid. And I’ll be the judge of what’s valid.

We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Yes, it would be. I would like to talk with you about these opinions live, in person, and raw. Online over a podcast would definitely work too.

Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
Any FREE promotion, give it to me. I ain’t paying for shit anymore. I am also open to collabs, if the people are nice.
