Artist Introduction
What’s your stage name and where are you from?
PAUL REVERE and I’m from the area around Aspen Colorado.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
My full name is Matthew Paul Revere Thomas IV. I was trying to come up with a moniker about 5 years ago and my friends told me to skip that and just use my middle name. Not even sure if my family is related to Paul Revere, but my parents have a wicked sense of humor.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Started playing guitar at 5 and started writing my own songs at 15. After a family tragedy ten years ago, I decided to change the trajectory of my music and started producing music of all forms. At this point, I’m 31, I produce every day, and I have been playing shows with live vocals/guitar and releasing electronic music of an expansive amount of genre’s for the past five years.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I wrote the lyrics for the track on my guitar over six years ago. I needed to fill time during a set I was playing at a local festival, and decided to sing the lyrics over a hip hop beat I had made. People/ my friends gave me a bunch of positive feedback on the song so I decided to go ahead and actually release it.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I feel like one of the more positive ways to respond to our modern consumer culture comes through minimalism. I tried to convey that in this particular song through the lyrics as well as the beat. We can all end up with too much stuff in this world, and that stuff ends up wasting too much time. Life is going to end; so we should avoid wasting time. One method to avoid this waste comes through simplifying the objects in our life as well as the actions we take in life. Hence the hook of the song is: “All those unnatural waves They shoot through our brain Brush that shit off And dip that brush in some paint.”
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Man, out of all the elements of production, vocals (especially when they’re my vocals) have always been the hardest to figure out. I ended up recording the vocals three times in this song before I finally got the final version. It’s always scary to open up to criticism from friends or strangers, but I would not have the track I do if I didn’t take and implement the feedback I got from my colleagues.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Tough question cause I produce a lot of genre’s and have favorite artists of a wide spectrum. As far as hip hop goes, it would be a dream come true to make a track with Slug of Atmosphere. Any lyrics I write have been inspired by his cadence and content. To see his song writing process and ask him about his musical journey would, to put it bluntly, feel absolutely amazing.
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
With the advent of AI music, I feel like live shows with actual human beings are going to be one of the few creative areas that machines won’t be able to compete with people. Because of this, I intend on making my show as magical and fun as possible and to play as often as possible. My goal is to build a solid audience of fans and listeners in my home state of Colorado and then steadily branch out from there.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
To get on the lineup for some bigger festivals (and out of local bars) is the next big step I’m currently shooting for.
