Artist Introduction
What’s your stage name and where are you from?
TaReef KnockOut, I’m from Tallahassee, Florida.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
TaReef is an Arabic name meaning “rare or uncommon”. I felt that name described me perfectly and for the legacy I been striving towards since I began chasing my dreams. TaReef symbolizes my unique style, musical attributes as an artist, as a person, and my Muslim faith. Originally my name was just “KO”. My homie gave me that name early on for my ability to “knockout” tracks in a timely fashion with witty lyricism and wordplay to go along with that. I thought the nickname was dope, but KO was too generic to be honest. I later added TaReef to make it “TKO”. And that’s the beginning of my stage name and the amazing journey to get to this point.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
It’s been a grind with some success and some failures. There’s no shortcuts or cookie cutter way to get to the top. This shit really is a marathon, and I’m thankful to be in the race.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
My latest track, ISO, was recorded in one take. Most of the songs I created over the past year or so have been done like this. Sometimes I like to do a second take to compare; it’s a good feeling to have. I just keep my head down and focus on getting better each time.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I’m telling my story the best way I can. So when people hear my music for the first time ever, or to the fans or listeners from the beginning, they’ll know the message I’m conveying is authentic to me. When people can feel that authenticity and growth behind my music, it makes it easier to listen and relate to. My story is really no different than the average person trying to make whatever situation they are in better. I’m gonna keep grinding and know it’ll all come together in due time.
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
This wasn’t necessarily a production issue, but I had a show back home and the DJ messed up my set. Like speeding the tracks up, butchering my name, etc. It rattled my nerves a little bit because this was early on in my career, and I was still getting used to performing on stage. I pushed through it and it boosted my confidence. Word of advice: if you can, make sure you have your own DJ or one that’s cool and knows what they’re doing.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I’d say J. Cole. He’s been a big inspiration and influential to me and my journey. To sit back, watch, work, and learn from one of my idols would be dope. Bonus artist: Summer Walker.
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Across the globe into new fans’ homes. I can see it taking me to new stages and experiencing continuous growth as an artist as well. I feel good and very optimistic about where things will be around this time next year.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Remaining consistent and confident in my abilities. The music will continue to speak for itself. The next big step is it reaching and connecting with the right audience. I know when that happens on a larger scale, it will create a special moment.
