Artist Introduction

What’s your stage name and where are you from?

The Keymkrz (Kumo Kenyatta & Kyu) – Toronto, Canada.

What’s the story behind your stage name?

Kyu and I had produced separately for 10 years +. I spent my years doing it for a group named ONEoak. We decided to become a team, and worked in outside studios, as well as our own. Especially in outside studios, people would tell us the only way this music will work for us is if he and I unite. Pupil, prior to us making the decision to come together had been calling us “The Keymkrz”. It was totally organic.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

Myself (Kumo), as mentioned Produced for 10 + years for a group named ONEoak, owned and operated my studio, mixed the music, and booked our shows and radio interviews. Starting producing outside my group, began meetings within the music industry. I found myself here, currently producing with Kyu, as The Keymkrz releasing 1 beat every day (for 10 months now and counting), 1 instrumental tape every month, and 1 new album every month from several artists.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

My Aunt Debbie passed away, and my Mom (her sister) held a reception after the funeral at my Mom’s house. Gwen, my Aunt’s daughter came up to me and asked me to talk to her boyfriend. She asked me to find out if he’s a good man. Someone that would protect her, and take care of her. I spoke with him, and told Gwen that yes, he’ll treat her good. I really had no idea whether he would. Talked to the guy for w minutes. 2 months later, my Mom called me and told me to “sit down”. She said “Gwen is dead, and Donovan killed her”. My most recent song is called “Though Shalt Not Kill”. The Keymkrz made the beat, and Leff dedicated the song to Gwen, kyrically. It is on Leff’s album, also called Though Shalt Not Kill, coming out July 1st, 2024.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

Through tragedy comes triumph. To move the soul, the body must also move. The greatest feats required extraordinary mental, physical and spiritual energy output. That positive will always overcome negative.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

We couldn’t afford to continue paying for the mix and master of our music, so we bought Pro Tools and learned how to do it ourselves.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

For myself, it is Bob Marley (despite the genre difference, and the fact that Drake is not only within our genre, but lives in our city). Bob Marley moves the soul, which is our intention with our instrumentals.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

To a broader fan base. 10 000, to be exact.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

We’re a production team, not artists and we look forward to the release of June’s album, “Murphy Shiloh”, by Pupil. We feel it is the best album, up to this point with the strongest production. It’ll be the 6th album this year so far.
