What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is Uncle Phil The Real, and I’m an artist out of Seattle, Washington.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
My government name is the very same as the actor on Fresh Prince, James Avery!
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Growth through the homeless and drug-addicted years built me into a superstar. Finding BandLab and punching in to write my music has truly developed my sound and writing. I shut down any event I pull up to and am ready to shock the world.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I’ve been struggling to find exactly what I want when it comes to a studio, and in that search, I ran into Mario Casilini. He sent me a little beat pack, and this song is still not released—I haven’t even teased it yet. But damn, yo, him and I are going to be a dynamic duo that the city needs!
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I just want people to know that if you don’t give up, things can change—things can get better. I’ve been addicted to dope most of my life and was on the streets as a social pariah for 5 years, and now I am building a brand and focused on gaining worldwide attention on my blessings.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
In the beginning, I didn’t know where to start or what to do, so I spent money at studios that didn’t have my music sounding right. I trialed and errored and realized I can record anywhere I want and pay just about the same—you just have to do your research!
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
It would be Lil Wayne. And I don’t feel like that needs an explanation. As a hip-hop artist, or just as fans—why would that not be your choice? He’s the greatest.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
In the next year, I at least see it changing my life and becoming my number one stream of income and locally being well known.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
The next big step for me is to be able to book festivals and bigger stages.
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
Yes, we just got to speak on what, how, and what price. I have a good idea about what works and what’s a waste of time.
