CoolhandTrew, a Virginia-based rapper comes back with Shock The World, a five-track EP on May 2, 2025.

Combining hip-hop, R&B, indie groove, and modern soul, this project is the new vision of an artist who has established a serious career by placing her songs on TV, touring the country, and writing her songs with sincerity. Inviting the listener into the moments of rest and conflict, Shock The World is warm, reflecting and groove-based. Trew incorporates velvet vocals, honest lyrics, and production that borders on smooth but reflective in Next To Me to Make Me Feel. It is music to listen to when it is late at night and driving, or when you are alone, and the most important thing is to look inside yourself and your heart.

The appeal of Shock The World is the manner in which Trew has made balance between vulnerability and craftsmanship. The delivery is not imposed but, of course, planned. The maturity can be felt: there are less flashy gestures, more attention to the presence. It seems as though he is asserting his place emotionally over spotlight on this EP. Be it the dualities in relationships, the heat of longing, or accepting the imperfect humanity, Shock The World displays the state of tension in the atmosphere between desiring love and reserving space to yourself.

The activity of CoolhandTrew dates back to more than twenty years, alternating between the work in the TV sync, touring, and collaboration, and writing that is inclined to actual stories.

His previous pieces were promising in terms of combining the R&B coziness to the hip-hop lyrical, though Shock The World indicates a more sophisticated palette. It is cleaner on production, the choices of the music are more intentional.

Trew is naturally in a curious musical tradition, the Southern soul meeting the East Coast hip-hop, and the indie R&B, geographically speaking, of Virginia. Those streams are reflected on this EP. One can hear echoes of old soul in the instrumental (strings, jazzy keys) and of new R&B in the hooks and self-layering of the vocals, and of hip-hop in the flow, rhythm, and self-conscious lyrics. The motivation appears to be drawn out of the reflections of the late-night, the connection and lack of connection with people, the harmony and peace of a person in the environment of the chaos. It has also awareness of mental health, community, quiet struggle, which points to the artist is not simply making music, but rather making meaning.

Trew talks of presence in interviews (as noted on his Bandcamp page) and on the notes accompanying Shock The World to maintain the center unshaken against all that the world throws at it.

This sense permeates these songs: they are down-to-earth, mortal, conscious of the darkness, but not allowing it to overpower them. It is evident that neo-soul and alternative R&B influence is present, and the lyricism is not based on the grand scale but rather on specific moments, even seemingly insignificant but burdened by their sincerity.

Shock The World is core about standing still in action. It is an EP concerning the love, confusion, identity, desiring, and peace. Trew does not attempt to resolve everything, he simply opens the windows into interior landscapes what would happen when you feel affection and confusion at the same time when you want to have someone next to you and you do not understand what you want, when you want to have love and you know that sometimes suffering is quiet.

Connection is the theme that is permeating the track after track: connection with others, connection with self. As an illustration, “Next To Me” (Track 1) embodies a wish to be close, the need to experience intimacy, to have something constant and present. and there is humility, which requests to be considered. Meanwhile track 2 “Can’t Figure You Out” struggles with the ambiguity of relationships: the desire to understand, but being torn between being drawn to and distancing.

The name of the song “Shock The World” is a statement. It winks to some sort of empowerment: Let me be what I am. Let me show up unafraid. In no such noisome declamation, but in silent assurance. Then “Bundle Up” is about the importance of shelter, protection, warmth, emotional and physical. And the EP finishes with the more cinematic orchestral Make Me Feel: vulnerability regarding what one needs, as well as what one gives. The ambient texture it has favors the lyrical message: silence, openness, letting emotions register.

Hyperbole is also inadvertent on the part of Trew; here, power lies in details. The EP is the most powerful when it gives breathing space to the imperfects: the silences, the indecisions, the acknowledgment of pain, and the hopefulness. It indicates that presence (being here, being felt) is transformational in the daily relationships. Such a down-to-earth integrity is not the commonplace, and that is one of the reasons why this work can sound.

Tracklist and Breakdown

Here’s a full track listing with time-stamps and a breakdown of what each song offers: strengths, areas to refine, and what to pay attention to.

Track Time Breakdown
Next To Me 2:31 Opens the EP with gentle instrumentation—warm keys, soft rhythm, understated beat. Trew’s vocals express yearning. It sets mood and exposes emotional truth. Might benefit from more dynamic contrast (bridge? build?) to push the emotion further.
Can’t Figure You Out 2:25 More upbeat rhythm, tension between melody and rap flow. The hook is catchy, lyrics speak to relational confusion. Slightly tight on layering—some elements compete rather than complement.
Shock The World 2:35 Title track: confident, a bit more energetic, yet keeps the introspective tone. This track bridges hope and resolve. Possibly a bit short—would be interesting to see an extended version with instrumental outro or breakdown.
Bundle Up 3:35 Warm groove, more spacious production, harmony between vocals and background instrumentation. Peaks emotionally. Role of production on vocals works well, but mix could push drums slightly more forward for contrast.
Make Me Feel 3:17 Cinematic strings, ambience, heavier emotional weight. Closing track: desire to be seen, to be emotionally fulfilled. Probably the most ambitious production here. Almost too polished in sections—could be rawer in places to distance from overproduction.

    Score

Several tracks stay within similar energy zones. Introducing more dynamic shifts—quiet bridges, vocal dropouts, build-ups—can amplify emotional peaks. This can make moments hit harder. The lyrics are honest and grounded, which is a strength. That said, occasionally leaning more into metaphor or richer imagery could elevate certain lines—give them more lasting impact. Many songs are relatively short (2½-3½ minutes). That works well for streaming and immediacy, but adding one track with extended instrumental sections or more elaborate structure could show expanded musical vision and allow listeners to sink deeper. The production is polished, which is a plus. For future work, maybe experiment with rawer textures in some tracks—a less clean vocal, atmospheric imperfections, lo-fi elements. Those contrasts help highlight the more refined parts. The EP is cohesive, but if every song leans toward smoothness, there’s some risk of slightly blending together. More variation in instrumental palette—e.g., use of unexpected instruments, varying percussive styles, or outlier track(s) with alternate mood—could sharpen memorability.
