Artist Introduction
What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Yellow Couch Music based in Brooklyn, NY.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Yellow Couch Music emerged during the upheaval of the pandemic when my life took a sharp turn, prompting me to seek change and create something new. Desiring a vibrant change, and somewhat mid-life crisis, I bought a colorful yellow couch and some recording equipment, transforming my living room into an impromptu recording studio. With no grand plan in mind, I dove into capturing my ideas, fueled solely by creativity and a love for the craft. I invited my musician and artists friends over to gather around the couch, lending their talents and collaborative spirit, as we grew these raw ideas into fully realized compositions. What began as a spontaneous venture blossomed into a full-fledged project, with each idea evolving into a song, and now a full-length album in the works. Yellow Couch Music serves as my own creative exploration while collaborating with a diverse array of talents from New York City and around the world.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Listen to your gut and trust your instincts; don’t hinder yourself with unnecessary stress. And above all, never forget to enjoy yourself along the way.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
The journey of creating “Locust Walk,” our upcoming single, has been nothing short of fascinating. It all began with the drums, drawing inspiration from Ahmad Jamal’s timeless piece, “Poinciana.” I then invited Lars Haake to play some abstract saxophone lines I wrote and asked him to improvise his own ideas for the piece as well. Layer by layer, the track morphed into an abstract sonic landscape, spanning over five minutes. Sensing it needed an extra dimension, I reached out to my middle school art teacher, Alonzo Jennings, a gifted poet and visual artist. Our paths had crossed years earlier when I shared a video of Marshall Allen’s sax solo with him during his recovery from surgery, a gesture that lifted his spirits. When Alonzo contributed his poignant words to the song, reciting his tribute poem to Sun Ra titled “Locust Walk,” it felt like destiny had aligned our paths once more. The seamless fusion of his spoken word with the music, without him even hearing it beforehand, felt like a serendipitous moment of creative synergy. His part aligned perfectly with the song’s length and dynamics. I then scrapped the original bassline and the drums, composed a completely new rhythm section with a harder, edgier sound, tapping into my hip-hop and rock roots to make something truly blended stylistically.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
It’s about capturing a sense of freedom, love, connection, and peace. Each song is intended to tap into these emotions, weaving a tapestry of experiences that resonate with the human spirit.
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
The whole songwriting process has had it’s own challenges. From the initial spark of an idea to figuring out which instruments to use, recording each part, and finding the right collaborators, it’s been a constant flow of decisions. I’m always checking in with my self to make sure the music gets what it deserves regardless of any outside factors. At the end of the day, it’s about the art for me.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Charlie Hunter. I love his playing and his sense of groove.
