What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Red Savage & The Wonder Years, and we are out of the Philly area. We partnered with Fluency Free on this release, and he is from VA.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Red Savage is a nickname that my brother gave me growing up because I have red hair. He would call me all different names, replacing parts of famous people’s names with “red,” like Reddie Mercury, Redrick Douglas, and Red Savage. Since we are using Red Savage, we figured calling the rhythm section “The Wonder Years” made sense.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
All of us have different musical backgrounds and tastes, which is why we create music across a broad spectrum of genres. Truly, we are more of an indie/blues rock band, but I really love old-school hip hop, so we work on projects like this from time to time. Overall, we just like making music and don’t take ourselves too seriously.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
All three tracks we just released were done live in an unplanned jam session where Fluency Free came up from VA for the night. The vast majority of the instrumentals and vocals were improvised on the spot. We liked how it sounded and thought we should just release it for fun.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
We aren’t trying to convey any real message. We are just creating music that we enjoy playing and hope other people might like it too.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
One of the challenges we overcame in production is that since we recorded everything live, there was instrument/vocal bleed across the different tracks. We used little EQ to adjust for that, and we didn’t really make many edits to the tracks because of it. Hopefully, it has a cool vibe because of that.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I think each one of us would respond differently, but for me, I’d love to collaborate with Black Thought if we are talking about hip hop. In my opinion, he is the best MC in the game today, and it isn’t even close. Plus, he is top-tier when it comes to freestyling, which would suit our style of improvisation and live recording.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I see us continuing to play shows, putting out an EP, and having fun.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Releasing our next EP.
