Hailing from the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, William Silas, known artistically as Gwillo, builds music straight from the concrete. His upbringing was marked by severe structural challenges and immense personal loss, including the loss of his father and brother to gun violence in 2006, followed by the passing of his mother in 2010. Turning to music at age 15 in a neighborhood basement setup, he discovered a vital outlet for his experiences. Despite facing incarceration in Georgia since 2017, Gwillo has operated as an independent force, releasing two complete albums from within the system and maintaining a consistent presence in the underground rap space.
