What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Alessia Piermarini and I’m from Rome, Italy
What’s the story behind your stage name?
It’s actually my real name. The same name that my parents gave me!!
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I’m fascinated by building overlapping layers of sound using my loop station, combining vocals, rhythms and percussion.
My songs often begin as poems, personal writings or thoughts from my diary.
For me, singing is not the message itself, but the tool I use to deliver it.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I had almost finished producing BPM ◎ and was ready to send all the layers to the sound engineer when I walked into a charity shop in London, where I’m based. It was love at first sight when I spotted a second hand Casio mini keyboard for just £7. I knew it had to be part of the track, so I bought it and started recording all over again!
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want my music to encourage people to embrace who they are, move at their own pace and feel free to express themselves. Authenticity as a first rule of self-respect. I also want to spread messages of peace, unity and openness to diversity, reminding people of the importance of connection and understanding.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
The challenge was making the rhythm flow naturally. As I mentioned, I played the drums using the tiny buttons on the second hand Casio mini keyboard I had found in a charity shop. Getting the right groove out of such a small instrument and its tiny buttons was quite a challenge but also part of the fun!
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
There are so many artists who have had a huge influence on my music. I would love to share a stage with Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder and FLO.
I’ve also had the privilege of collaborating with or sharing stages with artists such as Ursula Rucker, Jaguar Wright and Frank McComb.
What I admire about these artists is their incredible musicality and their ability to create an entire world through their music, not just great records.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’d love to develop a band sound and move beyond performing exclusively as a solo artist. I miss the old school feeling of rehearsing together, experimenting with arrangements, creating music in a room and then going for a drink afterwards. Like the good old days!
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Find the right record label or industry partner who believes in my artistic vision, expand my live performance opportunities and travel to countries where I’ve never performed before.
