What’s your stage name and where are you from?
We are Cold Chinese Food and we hail from Johannesburg, South Africa!
What’s the story behind your stage name?
That’s quite funny actually. When we started collaborating on the music in 2014 we were in separate countries and also studying in university. We were so busy on a Skype call that we forgot to organise dinner for ourselves so we both seperately ordered in some Chinese food. But even when it arrived we were still working on the music and forgot to eat so it went cold. Cold Chinese Food! It’s a metaphor for the hustle.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Collaboration. Underground performances. Debut album!
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
My car almost got stolen while shooting one of the parts of the music video because some Johannesburg neighbourhoods are a bit techy haha.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
Cold Chinese Food is a way to use street culture and hip-hop to convey the current anxieties of the youth in a way that let’s us all know that it’s okay. The world has it’s ebbs and flows and no matter where you are or what you’re going through, things will be okay. They might even shine like bling!
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Mixing was a challenge because the vocals were recorded in so many different locations so getting the album in unison thematically was not so easy. Luckily our mixing engineer is a champion! Shout out to Zain Vally aka DigitalZain.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Cool Affair. Just go and listen to the music!
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
We’d love to have the album out in a way that gives it’s reception what it deserves. We’d also love to perform it around a bit!
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Our debut album is a short distance away!
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
