Artist Introduction
What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Diamond and I’m from Columbus, Ohio.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
It’s inspired by the song “Diamond Girl” by Ryan Leslie and so I thought that would be the perfect stage name for me just without the “I” in “Girl” and so it worked out!
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I express my creativity through vocal performance, songwriting and rapping. The musical genres that influence me are R&B, Soul, Contemporary, Rap, Alternative, Jazz and Pop. And other places I have performed at outside of Ohio are New York, Atlanta and Detroit.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
One of the latest tracks on my album, called “Healed”, was recorded in the spring of last year. My engineer who I normally go to all the time for sessions gave me a shot before our session and I ended up doing this crazy run at the end of the song and turned out to sound better than I thought it would. I went above and beyond my own expectations for this track! It was a great experience.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want to inspire other artists like myself to write about things that they have actually gone through in life; which is where my music and the lyrics that I write come from. I also inspire anyone who may not be an artist but listens to my music to speak up for themselves and to not remain silent and stand up for what they believe in!
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
A challenge that I once faced was during a gig that I did last month, the person who agreed to play piano for me during my set decided not to show up on time at the very last minute. As a result, I told them that they could no longer play for me in the future for that reason and I ended up having to use the backing tracks for my set without the band involved. It worked out but I was disappointed at the same time and a few people still showed up for me despite the technical difficulties!
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
It would be Janelle Monaé, because when I went to her concert last year in September, she invited me up on stage to dance with her. She made me feel good about myself the whole time I was up there with her, along with a few other people that were on stage also. She gave us a moment to shine. And her music is above and beyond phenomenal, especially for someone like her who’s a queer artist like myself which is another reason why l’d work with her. And I hope to see her again in the future and record a track with her!
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I could see it taking me to other states, cities and countries to perform and blowing up internationally overseas!
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
The next big step is relocating to LA next year.
