What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is Don Sazón, I’m from Brooklyn, NY by ways of the L.E.S. & Harlem.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
I originally went by “J-HOT” for the last 15-17 years. But the whole Don Sazón aesthetic was always like an alter ego of mine, for years. Then in 2016 my bro Sav and I made a song called Sazón and started rocking as a duo called the Sazón Papiz. And recently I decided to rebrand and run with Don Sazón as my main stage name. For those that don’t know Sazón is the Spanish word for seasoning, and the company Goya specifically is very famous for their Sazón. It brings an extra bit of color/flavor to the food you’re preparing and that’s what I feel I bring to Hip-Hop and to the world is that extra bit of color and flavor that’s missing.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
It’s definitely been a roller coaster. As well as very testing. But it’s a journey I feel is worth taking.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I was having issues with my recording setup due to incompetence on my end when I was wrapping up my last project. And it was really a comical moment when I realized the mistake was my own and I was tripping for nothing.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I just want to convey my pain/story/struggles. While also remaining as creative as I possibly can be. I feel like I’m Hip-Hop/Rap specifically people tend to take the content itself very seriously to a point where they blur reality with the entertainment. And I just think I want overall to show and tell people not to be so serious.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
As I mentioned in the previous question I was having issues with my recording setup one day, and I was online researching as to what the issue may be. Basically I had my headphone jack plugged into the wrong side of my interface. Once I realized the next day after hours of researching other fixes, I just had to laugh and get back to work.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I have quite a few artist that I’d love to work with, some being Snotty, Pro Dillinger, The Musalini, XP the Marxmen, just to name a few.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Within the next year I hope to gain more fans/listeners, and doing more live performances in the tristate area, as well as around the country.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
The next big step for me is just learning to be more self sufficient and teaching myself more about the business and marketing side of music.
