Artist Introduction
What’s your name and where are you from?
Manny Grey. Brockton, Massachusetts.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Since childhood, i’ve always been trapped between odd extremes. One block away from the hood. One block away from the nice neighborhoods. Grew up in a big house but we where broke and it was filled to the brim with people. Some not so good people. Things like that. Always in the center of strange recurring contrasts. But its in-between those extremes that I found the most truth. So it just made sense to go with Grey.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Forward to the biggest stages.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
The song cemented my patience. Sometimes when you’re working towards something in life, you waiver. You get worried that you’re moving too slow or making the wrong moves. But i’ve achieved all of my accomplishments the same way: Step By Step. No matter the scale.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
That there are people out there who think like you do. There are people who see the world how you do. Who feel angry, sad, excited, like just like how and why you do. To understand that your power and potential are locked behind a series of choices and your awareness isn’t a curse. It’s a key to your Path. My live shows are gatherings of people like this. Where we can be ourselves free from judgement, even of ourselves.
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Our rented camera fell over and smashed into the cement while filming the very last shot of the day of ‘Step By Step’. We removed the glass shards and luckily there was a lens protector on the main lens. But the LCD display had also been broken as well as the focus wheel on the lens. We finished the rest of filming looking through the view finder and using the analog buttons. Luckily, it wasn’t damaged beyond repair. Immediately afterwards, i fell ill with a virus that left me bedridden for 5 days and hospitalized for an evening. I finished editing the video at the tail end of it, still sick out of my mind, in order to meet our deadlines. Anything for the goal.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Yoko Konno – her music has always been a mainstay in my rotation. I’d love to hear what, if any, inspiration my voice could provide her and how she’d create around it. She’s a modern musical genius and i’d love to be around that energy. She gave me so many good memories through her music. It’d be an honor to be a part of it.
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
All over the United States. I’m working as hard as i can so that this becomes all I do. It’s want I want for my life.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
As an artist, it’s to push my creative boundaries. To become more skilled in each of my gifts in order to blend more mediums together. That means finding teachers, mentors, and having more new life experiences. As a businessman, it’s to become a full time creative and support my art through itself to build something greater.
