Interview with J(X)
Lanzen: Welcome, readers! Today, we’re thrilled to feature J(X), a versatile artist from Oxnard, California, currently residing in the Bay Area. Let’s dive into the conversation!
Lanzen: J(X), thank you for joining us. Can you tell us about the significance of your stage name and how it represents your identity as an artist?
J(X): Absolutely. J(X) serves as an algebraic representation of myself. “J” represents the constant, the core essence of who I am, while “(X)” symbolizes the variable aspects—whether it’s my collaborators, influences, or the gear I’m using at any given moment. It’s a reflection of the dynamic and multifaceted nature of my identity as an artist.
Lanzen: Your music embraces a diverse range of influences, from rock bands to cumbias and hip-hop. How do you aim to showcase the intersectionality of your identity through your music?
J(X): My goal is to break traditional barriers and labels in music by showcasing the intersectionality of my identity. Drawing from my diverse background, I infuse elements of rock, cumbias, hip-hop, and beyond into my music. By refusing to confine myself to a single sound or label, I hope to encourage others to embrace their multidimensional identities and break free from societal expectations.
Lanzen: Your latest release, “Karatecca,” involved creative collaboration with Li Wrecca. Can you share more about the inspiration behind the song and the collaborative process?
J(X): “Karatecca” was a collaborative effort with Li Wrecca, and we wanted to leverage our shared interests and backgrounds throughout the song’s rollout. From our mutual love for anime, particularly DragonBall Z, to playful nods to our physical resemblance, we incorporated these elements into our campaign. For example, we created content paying homage to the fusion scene in DragonBall Z, featuring our faces. It was a fun and creative process that added depth to the song’s release.
Lanzen: Your music aims to promote openness about identity and the acceptance of multidimensionality. Can you expand on this message and its importance in today’s cultural landscape?
J(X): I hope to inspire others to feel comfortable embracing the layers of their identity. As a Mexican producer, I refuse to be confined to stereotypes or expectations. I want to show that it’s okay to be multidimensional—to draw from various influences and express oneself authentically. We’re all more than just one thing, and embracing our complexities can lead to greater creativity and self-expression.
Lanzen: Balancing fatherhood, a career, and pursuing music can be challenging. How do you manage these responsibilities, especially when it comes to the technical aspects like mixing and mastering?
J(X): It can indeed be overwhelming at times, but I’ve found ways to navigate it effectively. One key aspect is outsourcing certain tasks, like mixing and mastering, to trusted collaborators like AxaTheDruid. By delegating these technical aspects, I can focus on the creative process and maintain a balance between my personal and professional life.
Lanzen: Dream collaborations often drive artistic aspirations. Who are your dream collaborators, and why do you admire their work?
J(X): I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some incredible artists, including Speak on our song “Misawa.” However, my dream collaborations would be with Royce da 5’9 and Schoolboy Q. Both artists embody individualism in their music, and I admire their unique styles. Collaborating with them would be a dream come true, allowing me to further explore my creativity and push boundaries in my music.
Lanzen: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for your music career, especially in terms of international collaborations and performances?
J(X): I envision my music taking me and my family on the road, with opportunities to collaborate with artists from around the world. From Europe to Japan, I hope to not only create music together but also perform internationally. These experiences would not only enrich my artistic journey but also broaden my cultural understanding and perspective.
Lanzen: You mentioned a podcast earlier. Can you tell us more about it and what listeners can expect?
J(X): Certainly! The podcast is a platform where I delve into various topics related to music, creativity, and identity. Listeners can expect insightful discussions, guest interviews, and behind-the-scenes insights into my creative process. It’s another avenue for me to connect with my audience and share my passion for music and self-expression.
Lanzen: It’s clear you’re deeply engaged with your audience through various platforms. Can you tell us more about your streaming activities and the NFT experience you offer to your fans?
J(X): Absolutely. I regularly stream on platforms like Twitch, Kick, and Instagram Live, where I interact with fans, share updates, and even showcase my creative process. Additionally, I’m actively involved in Discord communities and my local hip-hop scene. As for the NFT experience, it’s a token-gated opportunity for superfans to access exclusive content, including demos and unreleased songs from my upcoming EP and album. It’s a way for me to show appreciation for their support and provide them with unique experiences.
