What’s your stage name and where are you from?

macy, Kansas City

What’s the story behind your stage name?

macy is my middle name. I outgrew my earlier monikers and wanted to keep it simple. I’m named after my great grandfather who was a school teacher.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

As a kid, I was always listening to the radio. From the oldies station playing Motown hits to the school bus playing Hip-Hop and R&B. In college I began to rap battle, which took me away from making songs, but lately I’ve been inspired to get back into making music.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

My friend Spencer came over on a Saturday afternoon with the beat on his MPC and five MCs wrote verses. We never came up with a hook, so I left it as a posse cut. We centered the theme around the title, “Talk It Out”. Some wrote about reconciliation with loved ones despite disagreements, others talked about rifts that were irreconcilable.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

More that anything, I want to share the way I feel. Sometimes that makes for a fun song, other times it’s more about personal catharsis. Either way, I hope I encourage listeners to think and feel and grow with me.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

Getting 5 MCs on one beat required enough variation in the instrumental to keep the song interesting. Spencer built up lots of layers on his sampler then we took the stems and carved out the various parts. When the beat switches up for the third verse, it changes drastically, its almost hard to believe it came from the same sample. I love how the tone becomes more aggressive and matches RaStylus’ lyrical content. It keeps the energy fresh which is important considering the song is quite long.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

I would love to work with Terrace Martin. I know he works with jazz and Hip-Hop artists from Kansas City as well as legends like Kendrick Lamar, Robert Glasper, and Thundercat so I think that would be a step in the exact direction I want to go.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I’d be happy to do some local shows. A dream gig would be to play in Japan with my homies.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

Making an album is the next move for me. I just started releasing music in 2024 and I have 4 singles available on all streaming services at this time. I’ve been stacking up demos, which I want to polish up and turn into a bigger project.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
