What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Mocity Jones & I’m from Detroit MI
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Motown was a big influence for me growing up and being in the motor city, Mocity felt natural to me. I added my mothers maiden name jones to set myself apart from other artist.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I went to Wayne state university for music playing the piano, dropped out and decided to pursue music independently making beats. I used to write poetry as a kid and decided to pick up a mic when I got a good reception at a poetry reading. When my album “De-twah” got some attention I never looked back, this music thing is therapy for me now.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I love going to the studio and connecting with other artists. Detroit has a cutthroat audience and will eat you alive if you’re not careful so it’s important to not be afraid to connect with others. It turns into a listening party if you’re not careful but I enjoy it
What message do you want to convey through your music?
Currently I just want to connect with others emotionally and lyrically through music by being myself and having fun.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I’m currently working on a concept album called Sand city. Me and my producer Sand Raptor were having trouble telling a story with the album, but when we sat down and wrote out who our character Raptor Jones was And what kind of world he lived in. We were easily able to make skits and story structured songs for “Sand City”
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
This changes for me all the time but currently Tyler the Creator because he is the current living king of concept albums and a talent beyond just music alone.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
This music thing ain’t a sprint. It’s a marathon people only say you blew up when they haven’t heard of you and they suddenly see you not knowing you’ve been working at this for over 20 years. That being said, I see myself collaborating with a lot of artist and investing in myself as an artist
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I never look at the numbers when I’m talking about goals. If all you do is chase numbers you’re never gonna be satisfied. My goals are connecting on my fans and staying true to myself. As far as Big steps go, I’d love to get more radio play both local and satellite stations.
