What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Nate Variety, and I’m from Detroit, Michigan.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Prior to starting to create music, I had dreams of having a design/production studio. I always had an interest in multiple mediums of creation, so I was always playing with the idea of having “Variety” in the name. Once I started making music, it seemed obvious to be Variety, and through trying to make it more personal and unique to me, I landed on Nate Variety as opposed to The Variety, which was the first name I chose.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
A journey to find my voice and healing. An enjoyment of learning and expanding. A challenge worth working through.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
This song is actually two years old in terms of me writing it. I do a weekly open mic with some friends called the Poetry Party, and when I decided to start performing the song again to build hype for the release of it, somebody that met me within the last year came up to me and said, “Damn, you’re really starting to grow in structuring your songs.” I appreciated that so much because this was a song I maybe overthought at a point and didn’t think it should come out, but it just really showed me how special this musical journey can be. You can have an idea or record that’s old and still have it be a breath of fresh air.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
The message I want to convey through my music is to keep pushing, keep vibing, keep loving, and most importantly, keep living. These days we get the opportunity to live aren’t promised, so let’s just enjoy it. Gratitude even when it’s hard.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
The biggest challenge during production was probably just elevating to the point of having a good enough grasp on the mixing process. I’ve always taken pride in mixing my music myself, but there was a stretch where I didn’t always feel supported or empowered to continue that process of developing those skills on the journey of pursuing music. I overcame it by just working to trust myself again. I’ve released a few songs in the past year and have just been appreciative of getting back to being okay with the process of it all.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with SZA. I really enjoy the way she writes, and I think we could really make some fun music.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Truthfully, I see a tour on the horizon. I don’t exactly know what that’ll look like, but the goal is to be moving around the country and just getting the music to more people.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I think a body of work will be the next step for me. I’ve been toiling with how I want my next project to sound and what I want to say overall. It’s coming together, though. I’m getting close.
