What’s your stage name and where are you from?

NEPOLEON COMPLEX (Brisbane AUSTRALIA)

What’s the story behind your stage name?

I was looking for a name that captured the idea of “angry little man syndrome.” While researching, I came across the term “Napoleon Complex,” and it immediately caught my attention. I liked the attitude and psychology behind it, but I wanted to make it my own, so I swapped the A for an E, and NEPOLEON COMPLEX was born. It’s a name that plays with people’s perceptions and expectations, which fits perfectly with the artist I’m creating.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

Music has always been part of my life, influenced by everything from hip-hop and soul to rock, pop and theatrical live performance. After years of developing my songwriting and sound, I decided to take control of my creative direction and launch NEPOLEON COMPLEX as an independent artist. Now I’m releasing original music, performing with the Brisbane City Gospel Choir and building towards a live show that combines music, movement and theatre.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

One of the most interesting decisions with Blood on My Sneakers was stripping the lyrics out of the chorus and letting choir-style vocals carry the emotion instead. The rap verses tell a personal story about appearance, identity and the pressure we put on ourselves, but the wordless chorus gives the listener room to feel something without being told what to feel. Sometimes taking words away says more than adding them.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

I don’t think music always needs to deliver one particular message. Sometimes it’s about confronting uncomfortable truths, sometimes it’s about what’s going on inside your head, and sometimes it’s simply about making people feel something. My songs explore identity, personal struggles, perceptions and the contradictions of everyday life. I want listeners to connect with the music in their own way, even if they take something completely different from it than I originally intended.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

One of the challenges with Blood on My Sneakers was finding the right balance between the hip-hop verses and the more atmospheric chorus. I originally had lyrics in the chorus but eventually decided to remove them and let the choir-style vocals carry that section. It was a reminder that sometimes the best production decision isn’t adding something — it’s knowing what to take away.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Tyler, the Creator. I love that he doesn’t seem interested in following anyone else’s rules. His music crosses genres, his visual identity is distinctive, and his live performances feel like much more than just someone standing on stage performing songs. That combination of music, theatre, character and unpredictability really appeals to me. I’d love to see what would happen if we put our creative ideas together.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

Hopefully onto stages I haven’t even imagined yet! Over the next twelve months, I want to establish NEPOLEON COMPLEX as a distinctive live act, continue releasing original music and start building an audience beyond Australia. Japan and South Korea are particularly interesting to me because of their appreciation for strong visual identities and theatrical performances. Ultimately, I want to take my music wherever there’s an audience willing to embrace something a little different.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

Taking NEPOLEON COMPLEX from the recording studio to the stage. I’m developing a live show that combines hip-hop, soul, a live band, dancers and theatrical elements, with a few unexpected moments thrown in. I don’t want to simply stand in front of an audience and perform my songs. I want to create a show with character, humour, movement and a strong visual identity. The goal is to bring that vision to life in Brisbane in 2027 before taking it further afield.
