What’s your stage name and where are you from?
R.O.B Reckin’ On Beatz from Lorain, Ohio
What’s the story behind your stage name?
The story behind my stage name is that nothing else worked for me. I had other names like Prophet, Cashflow, etc. But none of those names stuck with me. Nobody ever called me by those names. People would ask what’s my rap name and when I said it they’ll say “Naw, you’re Rob”. Most of the time they’ll even spell it out, R.O.B. I actually liked it. Rob. It’s the way most of my family and friends greet me and it feels more natural than people calling me some name I made up. At first I just went by Rob or Young Rob, which is another name that people call me that know i make music. But of course, there are plenty of Robs and Young Robs that make music so I wanted to be unique and authentic with my name. One of my friends that also rapped made up a style that he had called “wrecking”. Meaning that you’re wrecking the beat with hardcore rhymes and flows. And yes, I know that wrecking is spelled with a W. I know. But it’s silent anyways so I took the W off of wrecking, dropped the G, added an apostrophe and said, I’m Reckin’ On Beatz! So, that’s where my stage name comes from. It was chosen for me by the people. I just took it and gave it my own meaning. Meaning that I’m wrecking beats when I hop on them. Rob or R.O.B is easy to spell and remember and the spelling of my name makes it unique and stand out. People say that it sound like a producers name but I’m an emcee. So, by the end of my musical journey, R.O.B Reckin’ On Beatz, will be known as a dope emcee.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
My musical journey so far has been an unique huge rollercoaster. Plenty of ups and down, twist and turns but a great learning experience overall. I wouldn’t trade my story for anything!
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
One interesting experience that I had while recording my latest track, Beast Mode, is when the track was finished and I listened back to it realizing that it turned out better than I’ve imagined!
What message do you want to convey through your music?
The message that I want to convey through my music is people to express and be who they are in a positive light, to become more fearless and overcome obstacles, anxieties and challenges. And to never stop doing what you love to do. Never stop doing what makes you happy as long as it doesn’t hurt yourself or others. Do what you love to do as long as it makes you happy no matter what age you are. Nobody is perfect but we all want to be happy. Music is where I find my peace and happiness. It doesn’t matter if zero or if billions of people listen to my music, I will write and record music for the rest of my life because this is what I love to do the most! Learn who you are and find your happiness. Share your story and/or get inspired by others to live more freely.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Well, before my recent releases, Dope Raps & Beats and Beast Mode, production has been my biggest challenge. I didn’t have beats that matched my style or I rapped over instrumentals and my sound quality wasn’t what it is now. And even there’s still room for improvement, the quality is much better than before and I have original music now. That happened by working with my current producer who is helping me produce better quality music. I overcame by wanting to be the best that I can be. Overtime, everything about my music will gradually improve.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I would collaborate with any artist that feel is dope, authentic and are true to the game. No matter what level they’re on, unsigned, underground or superstar. If the song is dope and something that I can relate to and has substance behind it. I will do the collaboration.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
In the next year, I see music taking me around the world. From the US to Japan and out in the UK, I want to reach my core audience. I know that my true fans are out there. You know what they say? If one person likes it, 10 people like it, so on and so on. I’ve have more than one person likes my music so that’s a sign that I have something for the people. I just have to get it to them. There’s an audience for everyone. And if you’re an artist that feels like no one like your music. Remember that the first and most important person that likes your music is you.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
My next big step as an artist is to release my debut project, Dope Raps & Beats. I remember somebody asking me, what’s the concept behind Dope Raps & Beats? Well, it’s just that right there. The concept is bringing back dope raps and beats and putting underground music back on top. Creating music that makes people love hip hop again. Love creating, listening and being apart of the whole thing. At one point, hip hop was thriving with emcees and music that was original, authentic and had substance to it. Dope Raps & Beats is the beginning of a new era. A new sound. Bringing boom bap back to the forefront and uniting artist all around the world for the love of hip hop.
