What’s your stage name and where are you from?
It’s They Call Me Max, and we are all based in London but originally from all over the world – Turkey, Ukraine, Isle of Wight, Essex, and my own family from Thailand and Scotland.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
My name is Max, but the idea came from how names are really for others to identify you, not yourself. The concept reflects how internal identity differs from the external one people see.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
It’s been a long, fulfilling journey of exploration and experimentation, moving at the right pace. Exhilarating yet sometimes mundane, making the process both intense and emotional. It’s a journey of continuous learning and development.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
Recording the cello was a unique experience. It was the first time we tried it, and the vibe was spontaneous. The idea was still undeveloped until the actual recording.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
We want people to connect honestly and emotionally with our music. Whether it’s upbeat or introspective, we hope it provokes genuine emotional responses.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
We were fortunate to have access to a commercial studio, so production was smooth. The recording of the drums happened a while ago, and the rest of the track was layered gradually over time.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Loyle Carner or Tom Misch – both have been inspirations, and they’ve done positive things for the culture.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
We would love to perform at festivals, which we haven’t achieved yet. Other than that, we’re looking to keep learning and connecting with audiences.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
To continue developing musically, grow our audience, and dial in our processes. Management or live agents would be great, but refining our approach is key.
We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Absolutely!
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
We have a music video dropping next month and a live video shortly after, so we’re open to promotional opportunities.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
Our latest single, “Algorithms,” is out on Spotify, Bandcamp, and YouTube.
What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?
Instagram or through the contact section on our website.
