JP Reynolds, born Rodney Jeremiah Reynolds, is a multifaceted artist, rapper, and songwriter with a rich and diverse sound. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, JP’s journey in music is not just about beats and rhymes; it’s a testimony of survival and faith. Defying early odds, JP’s birth, marked by an oxygen-deprived incident, set the stage for a life that would resonate with the spirit of storytelling and faith.
Growing up in Cleveland, immersed in the Baptist church and surrounded by family, JP found his dual love for God and music. The relocation to Mt. Vernon, NY, at eight, expanded his musical horizons. Inspired by Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” JP embarked on a musical journey that blended spiritual depth, love songs, impactful bars, and gospel vibes.
His teenage years introduced him to the complexities of code-switching, navigating the dynamics of a predominantly white, upper-class school while living in a black, middle-class community. JP’s identity remained grounded in his love for music, especially the hip-hop influences of Jay-Z, OutKast, Kanye West, and the Ruff Ryders, merging with the jazz, funk, gospel, and soul from his family and church.
JP continued his academic journey at Yale University, where he officially launched his music career in 2009. As a ‘Soul’ man in a ‘Trap’ era, JP’s poetic cadence and live instrumentation set him apart in the hip-hop scene. Forming The Peace and Power Band in 2017, he assembled a group that fuses vintage and futuristic sounds. The band, featured on BRIC TV’s ‘B-Side’ and AllHipHop.com, has graced stages at South by Southwest (SXSW), the Revolt Music Conference, and the 50th Anniversary March on Washington.
Beyond music, JP is an entrepreneur, coach, activist, and minister. In 2012, he founded Peace and Power Media, an artistic hub empowering emerging creatives. He supports young people as a Dream Director at The Future Project, blending social justice advocacy with faith. JP holds a Bachelor of Arts in African-American Studies and a Master of Divinity from Yale University.
JP Reynolds and The PEACEANDPOWER Band’s latest release, “Dreamcatcher,” transcends the boundaries of Hip-Hop and Conscious Hip-Hop. Blending elements of Neo-Soul and Pop Rap, the track weaves a tapestry of chill, moody, and epic moods. Drawing inspiration from artists like Chance the Rapper, Joey Bada$$, Black Milk, Free Nationals, and Anderson .Paak, the song promises a sonic journey that is both nostalgic and groundbreaking.
