What happens when a power-pop rocker gets snowed in, abandons a plan for new originals, and follows a song stuck in his head straight into a gloriously unnecessary detour?
There’s something beautifully rebellious about making a record nobody asked for and loving every second of it.
Winston-Salem power-pop rocker Clay Howard was supposed to be working on a new album of original material. Fresh off a fan club cruise to Mexico, he found himself snowed in at home, staring down the kind of forced downtime that can either kill creative momentum or send it careening into unexpected territory. Then Neil Sedaka entered the picture. A song got stuck in Howard’s head, the original plan went sideways, and suddenly the detour looked a whole lot more exciting than the destination.
