Artist Introduction
What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Raja Seivwright is my birth name, my artist name is Charm The Riot. I was born in London, England and currently live in Roseville, California.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Charm The Riot has multiple meanings, but mostly it represents the idea of turning ANYTHING negative into a positive.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I come from poverty. Music got me through hard times. Now I create my own blend of music that blends the my favorite genres: Hip hop, rock, funk, soul, jazz and electronica, to hopefully do for others what music has done for me.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I’m a huge Sade fan. The cover art for my latest single “Acceptance” is a visual interpretation of her 1992 album, “Love Deluxe”, meant to pay homage to her. For fun, compare the two covers sometime to see what I’m taking about. I basically wrote and rapped this song in the same smooth and laidback vibe she’s famous for, as if I was spitting the song and lyrics directly to her.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
Good vibes, authenticity, no boundaries.
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I don’t really freestyle. I mean, I do, but only for the sake of creating ideas in the studio. I don’t use freestyling as a weapon for battling but I know so many other people that “kill it” when they freestyle. That’s not my talent. I consider myself a writer first, a songwriter, above anything else. I write the lyrics and the music, listen critically, try to focus on the details of everything about the song, then rewrite it and reshape it, and do that over and over again. My songs can come together quickly and take 3 hours or it can take many years. Or the whole projects can get tossed in the trash. It all depends. For me, to build a piece of content I feel confident enough to release is ALWAYS a challenge. It’s euphoric but it’s HARD WORK too. Patience and consistency is how I overcome challenges, music or otherwise.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Chino Moreno of the Def Tones. He’s from my hometown of Sacramento, California and I’m I’m just a huge fan of his presence and originality.
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Not far, honestly. I do music because I love it. If it actually resonates with an audience, I’m just grateful and ready for whatever path it takes me on.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Just getting better as a songwriter, a producer, a live performer, vocalist and as a human being. If I’m able to accomplish this on a daily basis, that’s success to me.
