Artist Introduction
What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Cody Draco and I’m originally from Boston, Massachusetts, USA but I have spent most of my life in Florida, USA
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Growing up other kids made fun of my Greek last name Dracopoulos so I decided to shorten it to the simpler Draco when publishing poetry and music.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
My parents met country line dancing, so country music was a staple in my childhood. Early on, I was more drawn to the pop music of such artists as Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and P!nk. Then, in my teenage years I found myself falling in love with the wordplay of hip-hop artists such as Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Azealia Banks.
Fan Engagement
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
While creating “American Poet” I was in the midst of having a sort of identity crisis. I was unemployed, dealing with mental health medication issues, and I had no idea where my life was heading. By creating this track I was able to channel a lot of my frustrations into something positive and uplifting instead of further self-destructing.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
Through my music I want to convey the power of authentic self expression. I feel that acknowledging our experiences in life, whether good or bad, can be transformative and help us reach a higher level of existence.
Behind the Music
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
While producing “American Poet” I had a hard time allowing myself to use my poem “Flowers Never Picked” as the hook on the track. I overcame this by accepting that I am more than one thing. I’m a poet, rapper, and producer. This song celebrates all that I am.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Lana Del Rey! I feel like we both have a passion for authentic storytelling and sonically we enjoy a lot of similar sounds. I could see us joining forces over a beautifully orchestrated string laden track.
Future Aspirations
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I see my fan base organically expanding in the next year by word of mouth and reviews.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I’m currently planning to bring my music and poetry collections in physical format to my local marketplace for sale to reach a new untapped audience.
