Artist Spotlight: AC Smoove from the DMV

2

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is AC Smoove. I’m from the DMV, growing up in Northwest, DC, and Landover, MD.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
So my nickname is A Boogie or Boogie, and those names were already taken haha, so I just kind of came up with this one.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
My musical journey has been unexpected, fun, and skillful. I was encouraged to rap after performing poetry for one of my friends (shout out to my man Storm, who actually produced my first mixtape). Ever since then, I’ve been working on my craft and my sound, improving each time.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
My latest track is called Northwest Story. The cover art for the track shows me in the back of my grandmother’s apartment building in Northwest DC, specifically the Ledroit Park neighborhood. The song Northwest Story describes my upbringing and the upbringing of one of my friends who didn’t have the same support system I had. The song describes how our lives turned out (and are currently turning out).

What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want people to enjoy Jesus and see that serving Him is worthwhile. I want people to see that things can be done in a clean way and still be high quality. I also just want people to have fun when they listen to my music. I want them to bob their heads and add me as a song on their playlist as they go about their days.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Recording music, making sure my vocals sound right was a challenge. I didn’t want my voice to sound too low or too loud. To overcome this challenge, I would continuously play my audio and another song from artists like J. Cole or Foggieraw simultaneously and compare the volumes. I’d do this, sometimes over a period of days, until I felt that it sounded right.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Four artists come to mind. I’d like to collaborate with J. Cole, Foggieraw, Childlike CiCi, and/or Forrest Frank. They’re all great lyricists. Foggieraw’s flow is so smooth. Childlike CiCi’s bars and energy are crazy. Forrest Frank is just an amazing musician. I’d like to do a song with one, or all, of them.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I see my music taking me to different states to perform and do interviews. I see my music being shared all over the world. I see people reaching out to me to collaborate, do interviews, and perform. I see my streams increasing. I also see my skill in making music increasing drastically as well.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I’m just going to keep on making music. My skill as an artist grows with repetition, so I’ll simply keep on making music. I’ll also find some rap contests to enter in too.
