What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Cesar Jesus, and I’m from Raleigh, North Carolina.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
It’s a family name, as I’m Cuban. It’s both my grandfather’s and father’s name, and Cesar is my middle name.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I began as a devout student in my younger years and tried writing and recording at a young age, but I wasn’t ready for it at the time. After years of studying the craft, I jumped in the water and haven’t looked back since. Currently, I’m in a band that plays locally, and I also regularly travel for solo shows.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I’d been so busy with the band that I nearly forgot to release Creators. It’d been done for months, just sitting there, but now it’s out for the whole world to hear.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
Be your true authentic self with every song and every line. Once you let go of any thoughts of what you are trying to be or sound like, and simply just be you, it’s a truly freeing experience. Make the kind of music you want to listen to, not what you think others want to hear.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Like many artists, I often feel like the king of half-finished songs. Luckily, this one came together fluidly, and I was able to get most everything done on this track within a few weeks.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Black Thought. He’s my GOAT, and it’s not even close. His ability to command attention on a recording or live with a full band is unmatched. The voice, the bars, the style—nobody is touching that. He’s always been a big influence.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Hopefully to more out-of-town shows. I also run a business and am married with 3 kids, so I can’t do music full-time. But I love the experience of hitting the road, performing for new crowds, and connecting with other artists.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Release more music this fall/winter and work on creative projects with local Raleigh musicians. My band is taking a hiatus, so it’s a good time to collaborate with other local talent.
We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Yes! I’d be honored to be on it and would help spread the word.
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
I would just love people to hear my music and my catalog.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
Spotify.
