What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Dezzo X, and I’m from Indianapolis, Indiana.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
My real name is Desmond. When I first started making music, I used to go by the name Dauphin Amir, which means “prince” in French and Arabic. As I began to find my voice, my writing took on a form that was truer to myself. Dezzo is a nickname I had growing up, rooted in something real. The “X” is for what is unknown—the journey of discovery and the treasures you gain from that journey.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
From 2007-2019, it was strictly production, and with patience, I landed work with major artists like ASAP Rocky and Crystal Caines. After 2019, I carved out my voice as a rapper and songwriter. Now, I’m an artist, executing my vision for myself and others to create the best moments with our art.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
“Unknown,” one of the songs on my new album Inside/Outside, was a very special creation. I arranged the record with the intent of hearing it as the blues, funneled through the lens of hip-hop. The vocals were recorded on my iPhone, and it was the first time I added my own scratching to a record I’ve made. The creation of “Unknown” took about three hours. There’s nothing like the creative zone, and when you’re in it, you’d do anything to stay in it.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
Music is a service, and it’s a language of giving. I want to give myself, my experiences, and my taste in the hopes that it resonates with people. I want listeners to feel connected and understood, and to be inspired to achieve in their lives.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Myself. As a writer, I’m more cautious because I’m generally private and very picky about my vocal performance. Everything written for Inside/Outside was done in a week’s span. I didn’t allow myself to second guess the topics, which made for a more robust approach to the lyrics. I made sure not to let too much time pass to capture the feeling of the lyrics.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Tierra Whack. She’s a bold artist who captures so many ideas in short-form. I would love to create something that knocks for her, and she can just empty the clip.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’m fortunate to have a rich network of talented people locally and in the industry who push me as an artist and producer. I want to contribute to the sound of Indianapolis. There are a lot of unearthed diamonds in the city, and I want to help make quality music. I’m an advocate for good taste.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
“Establishing boundaries and pushing limits.” That’s a line from my song “Grandopening,” and it’s my mantra for the year and beyond. Making connections to my audience, becoming a more active presence in my city, and attaching myself to great music and opportunities. I cannot lose.

We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Absolutely! I love music, and I love discussing the finer details of music.

Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
I would like Inside/Outside to reach as many ears as possible, certainly.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
Inside/Outside is my new album, out now on all DSPs.

What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?
I’m @dezzo_x on Instagram and Twitter/X. I’m easy to reach, so let’s make greatness.
