Artist Introduction

What’s your stage name and where are you from?

H3RO, from the Carolinas

What’s the story behind your stage name?

When Nas released “Hip Hop is Dead”, I felt it was a sign that hip hop was in a distraught state moving away from its roots of storytelling and lyrics being important. So on a follow up album he had a song named “Hero” and I saw it as a response to what needed to save hip hop. So I took on the persona and that was history.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

Work in Progress. Learning from Mistakes. In it for the long haul.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

The music video was dope considering it almost all could’ve been done in one day—we had a lot of fun on set, and friends and band members came through to help make it a reality. I also recorded in front of a green screen and danced a lot, and if you know me you know I can’t dance at all so…now that’s on display for the entire world.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

I like to touch on many topics that resonate with me as a person. I’ve spoken a lot about racial injustice, the drug and violence culture in the industry, and now just authenticity in the industry. No topic is off the table for me.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

I’m Sometimes struggling with tone of voice, and whether or not I say things with the right inflections or not. I’ve gotten use to redoing recordings a few months after I did the initial one because I’ve come up with other things to add…it’s an endless cycle and eventually you just have to cut yourself off and say, simplicity is really key in a lot of instances.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Lupe Fiasco has been a hero of mine since day 1, because he taught me it was ok to not fit the persona of a hip hopper to make really dope music and be a household name. The stories he has told his career have always resonated with me, and I try to mimic the state of mastery he uses with vocabulary…still got a ways to go.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

More festivals, More Features, bigger social media following.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

Constantly improving and just being better than I was yesterday. Like Royce Da 5’9 said, I’ve realized there’s no such thing as me being in my prime. I can always improve.
